Can I Install an EV Charger at Home?

Having an electric vehicle charging station at home is a major plus for any who owns an electric vehicle. But what types of chargers are available? Can you even install one in your home?

Benchmark Electrical Services is a Tesla-recommended electrician, so let us fill you in on what’s needed to have your own EV charger at home.

Types of electric vehicle chargers

Let’s start with a breakdown of the types of electric car chargers. There are three levels: Level 1, 2 or 3. A level 1 charger is a standard, 3-prong outlet charger. A level 2 charger is an EV charging station. Level 3 chargers are the ones you see in public spaces, like a Target parking lot.

For some people, level 1 is enough. If you only drive a few miles a day and have enough time to top off your charge each night, you’re good to go. If your car is already needing a refill at some point during the day, however, you’ll want to look into level 2 – or the EV charger at home.

Charging ports

To charge your electric car at home, you will need a designated charging point wherever you park your car. Most people put it in the garage, but an electrician will first need to make sure it’s safe to do so. Instead of a 3-prong outlet, an EV charging station needs a dedicated NEMA 14-50 outlet – so you’ll likely need an upgrade to your electrical system. The investment will be worth it, though, when you’re not having to worry about running out of a charge while in your car.

If you live in an apartment, condo or duplex rental with a garage, you’ll need to ask permission before installing an EV charger.

Charging time

How long will it take to charge your car? This can differ depending on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point. A level 1 charger will will take around eight hours for a full charge. A level 2 charger will take about three hours for a full charge, which is about the same as a level 3 charger.
